#BGReviewer: Kinky Boots

You really could not ask for a more spectacular night out than seeing Kinky Boots the Musical. Of course it’s a story about being who you were truly meant to be but it’s also a story about overcoming adversities. And not just adversities that you face while trying to rebuild a failing business but also those you face while trying to live authentically in a world that tells you to fall in line and to blend in with the ‘norm.’ Kinky Boots the Musical makes you question what is ‘normal’ anyway and who decided on these arbitrary rules? This show will make you realize just how much life there is to live once you shed societal pressures and decide to live your truth, whatever that truth may be.

Kinky Boots isn’t just a show about self-acceptance either, it’s also about learning to accept others for who they are. Just because someone doesn’t look like you, just because someone doesn’t think like you or act like you doesn’t make them any less of a human being deserving of dignity, respect and freedom to live their life as they choose.

Now that we’ve covered the powerful messages in the musical let’s talk about all that sparkle! Kinky Boots the Musical shines onstage thanks to sexy, thigh-high, stiletto boots but also because of the earth shattering voice and the irrefutable charm of Kenneth Mosley as Lola. Mosley’s portrayal of Lola will make desperate to have her come to your next cocktail party. He plays the character with such conviction that you feel connected with Lola even if upon first glance you don’t find that you two have anything in common.

Another stand out was Karis Gallant as Lauren. Gallant’s quirky charm had the whole audience laughing out loud. Gallant’s character speaks out when she’s not asked to and more or less saves the day. Another instance in Kinky Boots where ‘stepping out of line’ and being unapologetically yourself serves the world better than fading into the background.

Kinky Boots the Musical will make you laugh, it will make you cry and it will make you want to “be yourself because everyone else is taken.”
