Western University is excited to announce the Western Mustangs Men’s Hockey team will return to Budweiser Gardens on January 30, 2020 to play the Guelph Gryphons in the 1st annual “Faceoff at the Forks”.
Inspired by the Thames River that runs through Western’s Campus and London’s downtown, the “Faceoff at the Forks” is a celebration of Mustangs hockey at the iconic London venue, located steps away from the Forks of the Thames. 100 years ago, Mustangs Men’s hockey was born from skating on the frozen river, and in January, we will bring that history back to the Western community for the first time in a decade with the “Faceoff at the Forks”.
In 2005 Western sold out the lower bowl of the arena and set a CIS record with 5,230 fans in attendance.
“We are continuing to build our signature event calendar, and the Faceoff at the Forks at Budweiser Gardens will be one of our preeminent events this winter,” said Christine Stapleton, Western’s Director of Sports and Recreation Services. “Budweiser Gardens is a tremendous facility and we’re excited to see Western students, alumni and the community in attendance to show their support and cheer on the Mustangs.”
“We are very excited to be welcoming the Western Mustangs Men’s Hockey team back to Budweiser Gardens for the first time in a decade” said Brian Ohl, Regional Vice-President and General Manager; Budweiser Gardens – Global Spectrum “Both Guelph and Western have rich athletic histories and we look forward to a great atmosphere as students and alumni from both schools gather to cheer on their respective teams in what is sure to be a hard-fought battle.”
“The team is looking forward to playing in front of a big crowd downtown at Bud Gardens,” said Mustangs Men’s Hockey Head Coach Clark Singer “Holding these types of events in CHL arenas across the country is becoming increasingly popular in U Sports Men's Hockey. It will be a great showcase for our program and brand.”
