ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE

After meeting with our Board of Governors and General Managers, the OHL has made the decision to delay the start of the 2020-21 season. Training camps had been scheduled to begin in mid-January, many players were set to report to their teams in early January, and games were scheduled to commence on February 4, 2021.

This decision follows Premier Ford’s announcement of a province-wide shutdown in Ontario commencing on December 26, 2020. The League will continue to consult and work closely with Governments and health authorities to determine potential start dates in the new year.

The safety of all of our stakeholders and communities is our priority and we are committed to starting the 2020-21 season when it is safe to do so. We know that this is difficult news for many of our players, fans, billets, parents, staff and teams. However, the restrictions both provincially in Ontario as well as nationally with regards to cross-border travel have informed our decision.

On behalf of the OHL, we wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season and we look forward to dropping the puck when we safely start the 2020-21 season.

REMAINDER OF LONDON LIGHTNING 2019-20 SEASON CANCELLED

The National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) board of governors unanimously voted to cancel the remainder of the 2019/20 regular season and playoffs as a result of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

"NBL Canada's decision to cancel the remainder of the 2019-20 season as well as the playoffs was truly a difficult one to make," said deputy commissioner, Audley Stephenson.

"Our owners, management, support staff, players and coaching staff invested countless hours in preparation for the season and its incredibly sad that we were unable to complete the year the way we would have liked to."

NBL Canada announced on March 12th, 2020 that it would suspend all basketball operations due to the Coronavirus outbreak and committed to monitor and assess the situation accordingly.

"Our league remains dedicated to the health and safety of our players, officials, fans, staff and general public and we feel that our decision to cancel the season is a prudent one in order to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus."

Fans are urged to continue to follow the safety measures put in place by their local authorities as NBL Canada begins preparations for its tenth season in 2020-21.

ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE ANNOUNCES CANCELLATION OF 2020 OHL PLAYOFFS AND 2020 MEMORIAL CUP

Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Commissioner David Branch, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), announced today the cancellation of the 2020 OHL Playoffs.

The CHL additionally announced the cancellation of the 2020 Memorial Cup that was scheduled to be held in Kelowna, BC from May 22-31, 2020. The 2021 Memorial Cup will be hosted by the OHL in May 2021.

Following consultation with the CHL’s Board of Directors as well as the OHL’s Board of Governors, it was determined that extreme precautions must be taken in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the League’s annual Championship trophies, the J. Ross Robertson Cup as well as the Memorial Cup, will not be awarded in 2020.

The League has continued to monitor ongoing public health developments regarding COVID-19. Given the troubling state of our global climate and public welfare, there is still too much risk and uncertainty to move forward in good conscience.

“This is a very difficult decision,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “In times like this, the safety of our players, officials, staff, fans and the general public is paramount.

“The environment that we currently find ourselves in is much more important than the game of hockey, and we all have a part to play in getting through these difficult times together. At the appropriate time, when it is safe to do so, our players look forward to returning to the ice in our passionate hockey communities to assist in the overall healing process.”

“We are continuing to monitor ongoing public health developments regarding COVID-19. When it is safe and we may resume play, we will advise on the status of the 2020 OHL Playoffs.
